2009 Outstanding Dissertation Award - Matthew Dyer

June 01, 2009

Dr. Dyer is currently in Texas where he has taken a position with Life Technologies and will soon be leading the bioinformatics efforts for the SOLiD next generation sequencing platform for the Central United States. Matt earned his doctorate in Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computation Biology in just 2-1/2 years. In his dissertation, Matt did groundbreaking research on the computational systems biology of infectious diseases. His work is the first in the scientific community to develop computational tools to predict and analyze large-scale molecular interaction networks that mediate host-pathogen interactions. According to one of his committee members, his research defines a new discipline, namely computational pathosystems biology. This type of research will lead to the designing of new therapeutics for diseases. His committee co-chairs were Dr. Bruno Sobral and Dr. T.M. Murali.
